REGISTRATION TYPE: SUPERVISED
STATUS: SUPERVISED CLIMBING

This form is for any novice climber under the supervision of a Highball Instructor or, under the supervision of an experienced climber and/or boulderer registered at Highball Climbing Centre.

The following information will be used to create your profile and climbing status. Where the participant is under 18 years of age, a parent or legal guardian must sign the form and agree that they and the minor are subject to all the terms of this document.

INTRODUCTION

Highball Climbing Centre is a dedicated indoor climbing centre. Our facilities include sport climbing walls (with rope & harness) and bouldering walls (no rope and harness), training equipment, and fitness spaces. We offer a progressive, supervised activity program for Novice Adults and Under 18’s, as well as coaching and development for independent, competent climbers.

Before you (or your child) use our facilities, you must complete appropriate registration, which includes reading, understanding, and accepting the risks set out below.

SUPERVISED CLIMBING

This registration form is for novice climbers (Adult or Junior) who need to be supervised when taking part in one or more of the activities of the centre. All junior climbers U18 are classified as novice climbers unless they are aged 14+ and have completed additional registration.

SUPERVISION

Only responsible adults (aged 18+) with suitable experience can supervise novice climbers. This is defined as:

  • A trained member of the Highball Crew via a pre-booked climbing course or activity, or
  • A responsible adult (aged 18+) who has completed appropriate registration.
  • *Junior novice climbers will also require permission from the young person’s parent / guardian.

CONDITIONS OF USE

OUR DUTY OF CARE

The Conditions of Use and Rules of Use of the climbing centre are not intended to limit your enjoyment of the facilities. They are part of the duty of care that we owe to you, the customer, by law. They are not negotiable and each time you ‘check-in’ at reception, you are agreeing to abide by them - whether you have read them or not. We recommend you regularly re-read these documents and also the Statements of Good Practice on display in the centre.

Staff are expected to approach anyone observed not climbing or belaying in line with recognised current good practice and/or Centre Rules or Conditions of Use. We reserve the right to refuse entry to customers for reasons of safety or inappropriate behaviour. CCTV is used to record and store moving images for the purpose of public safety and crime prevention.

YOUR DUTY OF CARE

You also have a duty of care to yourself and those around you to act responsibly and safely at all times. Climbing beyond your capabilities on any wall is likely to result in a fall.  Any slip, jump or fall may result in an injury to you or others around you, despite the safety systems in place to avoid it.

The Rules of Use and Statements of ‘Good Practice’ are on display throughout the centre; take the time to read them regularly. You must make your own assessment of the risks whenever you climb and extend this to any guests under your supervision.

THE RISKS

“All climbing activities have a risk of serious injury. Participants must recognise that even if they follow all good practice there may still be the risk of accident and injury. It is the responsibility of the participant to adhere to the conditions of use.” - The Association of British Climbing Walls (The ABC) Participation statement.

Whilst an indoor climbing centre is an artificial climbing environment, the risks involved are no less serious than when climbing outside in the wild. Participating in climbing activities necessitates putting yourself in a position where you could fall from a height. Any fall, whether controlled or not, risks a serious injury. There is also the additional risk that climbing holds can spin or break.

Bouldering is climbing without using a rope or harness for safety and therefore has increased risks - if you slip, jump or fall, you will hit the ground. You can minimise the risks by climbing down and stepping off. Soft flooring is installed at the base of the bouldering walls to provide a more comfortable landing, but IT DOES NOT GUARANTEE YOUR SAFETY.  Accidents and injuries are common, even if you follow good practice and climb safely.

Do you understand the risks of climbing?

Supervision on a Pre-Booked Highball Activity:

It is the responsibility of the Trained Highball Crew Member to keep you or your child safe. They will clearly state a start and end to this supervision.

Supervision by an Appropriate Adult:

Where a friend or family member is providing supervision, they will be legally responsible for your safety; Highball will not be held legally liable for any accidents or injury which occur.

RULES OF USE - NOVICE CLIMBERS

  • You must ‘check in’ at reception before taking part in any activity.
  • If you are not being supervised by a trained Highball Crew member, your supervising adult must sign you in as a guest at reception.
  • You must not belay, climb or boulder until you have been ‘signed in’ by an appropriate adult - as defined above.
  • You must make yourself aware of the risks and responsibilities involved in the activity.
  • There is a safety board in front of Reception with additional information about how to climbing and bouldering safely, and best practice notices are posted throughout the centre.
  • Climbing holds may spin or break at any time. This can lead to an unexpected fall, increasing the risk of injury.
  • You are not allowed to belay your supervisor (they must remain on the ground).
  • If you are aged 14+ and would like to boulder or climb independently - without supervision - you can apply for a Green Card once you have gained the appropriate experience. Speak to the Duty Team for more information.
  • The Duty Team and Duty Manager are available if you have any questions or concerns.

Do you agree to participate in the activities under the supervision of an appropriate adult as defined above?
