Conditions of Use of Perth College Climbing Wall

General

Climbing in its simplest form is movement at height; therefore there is a risk of a fall from height. Any fall may result in an injury despite the safety systems in place to avoid it. You must make your own assessment of the risks whenever you climb.

Our Duty of Care – The rules of the climbing centre set out below are not intended to limit your enjoyment of the facilities. They are part of the duty of care that we as operators, owe to you, our customers, by law. As such they are not negotiable. If you are not prepared to abide by them you may not use our facilities. If it comes to our attention you are not abiding by our rules; our staff will require you to leave.

Your Duty of Care – You also have a duty of care to act responsibly towards other users of the centre. Statements of ‘Good Practice’ are posted around the centre adjacent to the relevant facilities. These describe the accepted methods of use and how customers would normally be expected to behave towards each other.

The bouldering wall is the site of most injuries at a climbing wall. THE SOFT MATTING DOES NOT REMOVE THE RISK OF INJURY. Injuries can still occur even after a controlled/planned jump but are more likely after an uncontrolled fall. You should always be doing your utmost to avoid the risk of uncontrolled falls. This includes paying attention to how you will land and always assessing the risk of each climb that you undertake. Lead climbing also contains inherent risks, which are always present. Any leader fall can result in an injury and you must exercise great caution and preparation before you expose yourself to that risk. In top roping and leading, the greatest risk is presented by the belayer. Always make sure they are skilled enough to keep you safe; if you are unsure consult a member of staff.

Unsupervised Climbing

Before you climb without supervision, the centre expects you to be competent in the activity you are wishing to undertake. You are required to register to say that you understand and accept the Rules below and that you understand the risks involved in your participation. Anyone who has not registered must not climb without supervision. Unsupervised climbing is just that: Staff will provide whatever help and advice they can, but instruction in the use of equipment or climbing techniques will only be provided when booked and paid for. If you are not confident in the use of any climbing equipment or techniques, you must not attempt to use it without the supervision of someone who is competent to do so.

Supervised Climbing

An adult who has registered at the centre may supervise up to two novice climbers as guests as long as they are prepared to take full responsibility for the safety of those people. Novices/guests may not belay without on the ground supervision and support of the supervisor.  Where this is not possible novices should book on a ‘Taster’ session and/or ‘Learn to Climb’ course. Groups of three or more novices must only be supervised by an instructor holding relevant qualifications and insurance. Novice climbers are the responsibility of the supervisor and the supervisor must remain with their novice(s) when in the centre.

Children (Under 18)

All children in the centre (under 18) must be supervised by a registered adult unless they have been assessed by the centre, obtained parental consent and registered for Junior Unsupervised climbing.

RULES OF PERTH COLLEGE CLIMBING CENTRE

General Safety

  • Please make yourself aware of and abide by all COVID-19 control measures
  • Report to reception on each visit before you climb
  • You must exercise care, common sense and self preservation at all times.
  • Report any problems with the walls (especially broken or spinning holds), equipment or other climbers’ behaviour to a member of staff immediately.
  • Do not adjust or remove climbing holds or any other wall apparatus
  • Volumes on the walls are designed to enhance the quality of climbing but you must be aware of and accept that when climbing above them there is an additional risk of falling onto them.
  • Climbing beyond your capabilities on any wall is likely to result in a fall. Any fall may result in an injury despite the safety systems in place. You must make your own assessment of the risks whenever you climb.
  • Participants must understand that climbing while pregnant can increase the risk posed to mother and unborn child.
  • Participants must be aware and accept that climbing holds can spin or break
  • You must do everything reasonable and practical to avoid endangering yourself or others.
  • Refer to best practice signage for specific area safety rules.
  • You have to be aware of and adhere to the safety rules of the centre at all times.
  • You take responsibility for adequately maintaining your equipment.
  • Please empty your pockets and remove all jewellery before climbing.
  • Be aware of the other climbers around you and how your actions will affect them.
  • Do not distract people while they are climbing, belaying or supervising.
  • Stand well back from the climbing walls unless you are belaying or spotting a climber.
  • Never stand directly beneath a climber
  • Ensure the climbing zone is free from hazardous items.
  • Appropriate and clean footwear should be worn at all times
  • If you have children, you must keep them under control and supervise them directly at all times. Be close enough to affect or control the child’s behaviour at all times.
  • Please make yourself aware of the location of the fire exits in the building and fire assembly points

Bouldering & Traversing

  • The impact flooring under the bouldering walls is designed to provide a more comfortable landing for the climbers falling or jumping from the bouldering wall.
  • IMPACT FLOORING DOES NOT REMOVE THE RISK OF INJURY.
  • Uncontrolled falls are likely to result in injuries to yourself or others.
  • Always climb within your capabilities and whenever possible downclimb, or if this is not possible, use a controlled/planned jump
  • It is your responsibility to ensure that you can climb down or land safely; don’t climb into a situation that you cannot safely get out of.
  • Do not climb over the top of the structure. Boulder routes finish at the highest hold.
  • Keep the landing areas clear
  • Never climb directly above or below another climber.
  • Always take your harness off before bouldering.
  • Remove anything from pockets that could hurt you when landing.
  • Always be aware of people climbing above and around you

Roped Climbing:

When Climbing

  • Please ensure you identify if your chosen route is a top rope or lead route. Solo climbing on top rope or lead climbs is not acceptable; always use a rope to protect yourself on these climbs.
  • It is your responsibility to vet your climbing partner's ability before they belay you.
  • Always tie directly into the harness using a suitable knot. Clipping in with a karabiner is not recommended in normal climbing situations.
  • Never climb directly above or below another climber and ensure you keep all landing zones clear.
  • If traversing on the roped walls always stay beneath the first quickdraw

When Belaying

  • Always abide by good practice when belaying
  • Novices must not belay without on the ground supervision by their supervisor backing up the brake rope.
  • Always use a belay device attached to your climbing harness with a locking carabiner as per manufacturers' guidelines. ‘Traditional’ or ‘body’ belaying is not acceptable.
  • Ground anchors and weight-bags may be provided to give support to people belaying a climber who is much heavier than they are. Direct belaying from ground anchors and weight-bags is not acceptable.
  • To ensure your partner's safety, pay attention to what the climber is doing
  • Always stand as close to the climbing wall as is practical – sitting or lying down to belay is not acceptable.

Lead Climbing

  • Lead belaying requires a higher degree of skill and understanding from top rope belaying and should only be undertaken if you have received training or are competent to do so. If you are unsure do not climb and ask a staff member for available instruction at the centre.
  • When using the lead walls, you must supply your own appropriately rated dynamic rope.  Do not use the centre’s top ropes for lead climbing.
  • Quickdraws/runners/clips are provided on the lead wall. Please don’t use your own.
  • Running belay attachments (runners/quickdraws) are already provided at intervals on the lead walls. You must identify the line which your route follows and clip all the runners.  You must not skip clips and clips must be clipped in order.
  • If seconding a climb, the second climber should be protected from uncontrolled swings by appropriately clipped quickdraws. The rope MUST be securely fixed to both the lower-off anchor carabiners.
  • You can lead any top rope route you wish. To ensure the top rope is out of the way please use one of the following methods. 1) move the top rope to the side well out the way and lower from the last quickdraw 2) pull down the top rope and replace after you have climbed the route by trailing up the top rope and clipping it both anchor carabiners. Ensure you do not lower off the same anchor as the top rope.

Training Area:

  • You use the training equipment at your own risk. If you are unsure how to safely use any item, please ask a member of staff.
