Know where all persons on the range are always.

Shoot only at authorized targets.

At non-scheduled times where more than one shooter is on-line, a Duty Range Master must be present.

Do not handle a firearm or stand on the firing line where firearms are present while others are downrange. Do not handle a firearm or dry fire behind the firing line.

Ear and eye protection is mandatory for all shooters and spectators.

No more than 2 persons are allowed at a firing point (shooting stall) on the firing line; 1 shooter and 1 coach/spotter.

All firearms carried from the parking lot to the range office or classroom must be unloaded and cased.

Range Commands

"Range is hot"

This means that shooters may handle their firearms on the firing line. They may also handle their firearms in the ready area provided the actions are open or otherwise made safe. Load only on the firing line. At all times the 4 basic safety rules must be observed.

"Range is cold"

This means that the range is closed with respect to handling any firearms either on the line or in the ready area. All firearms are to be cleared; magazines removed, actions open or made safe. Long guns must be racked. Handguns may lay on the bench with the action exposed for verification by a Range Master. All shooters after benching their firearms must step back from the firing line.

"Commence/Begin firing"

This command should be given by the Duty Range Master after the range is declared hot. It informs the shooters that they may begin firing at authorized targets.

"Cease fire"

Whenever this command is given all shooters must immediately stop shooting, put the guns down on the table pointed down range, step off the concrete, and wait for further instructions from the Range Safety Officer.

NOTE: This command may be given by anyone who observes an unsafe condition on the range.

"Other commands"

There are other range commands like "Ready on the right, ready on the left, ready on the firing line, etc." that the range officers may see fit to use. Usually, ROs with a military background tend to use them. The intent is to make sure that everyone is ready to begin firing. These commands will be given by the Range Master when a competitive match is in progress. Variation of each may be used interchangeably.

To indicate emergency or hazardous conditions:

"CEASE FIRE" To stop all shooting routinely or, in the case of an emergency, immediately. Whenever this command is given all shooters must immediately stop shooting, put the guns down on the table pointed down range, step off the concrete, and wait for further instructions from the Range Safety Officer.

To prepare the range for live fire:

"MOVE FORWARD" To get shooters into position to prepare to begin shooting. Shooters will move from behind the ready line to their assigned position. DO NOT TOUCH FIREARM! Get comfortable, adjust your position make sure you are on the correct side of the bench.

"PROTECTIVE GEAR ON" To prepare the shooter for a safe experience. Shooters should put on first their eye protection then ear protection. “EYES AND EARS”

"YOU MAY PICK UP YOUR FIREARM" To prepare line for firing. Shooters will pick up their firearm, sight in on the target, make any final adjustments and prepare to load.

"LOAD" To notify the shooters that they may load their first round. Shooters will load their first round and keep finger off the trigger and stand ready for the next command.

"IS THE LINE READY?" To determine if all shooters along the line are ready. All shooters NOT ready should indicate their status to the RSO. Sufficient time will be allowed for the shooter to complete his/her preparation.

"READY ON THE RIGHT?" To declare that the shooters have indicated they are ready on the right side of the range. Any shooter not ready at this command may choose to either alert the RSO that he/she is not ready or to complete the process of getting ready before the final command has been given.

"READY ON THE LEFT?" To declare that the shooters have indicated they are ready on the left side of the range. Any shooter not ready at this command may choose to either alert the RSO that he/she is not ready or to complete the process of getting ready before the final command has been given.

"READY ON THE FIRING LINE?" To notify all shooters that the range is about to be under live fire and that if anyone is not ready at that point, he/she should notify the RSO; Otherwise await the next command. Shooters simply await the next command.

"COMMENCE FIRING" or "HOT RANGE" To declare the range formally open for live fire. The shooters may commence the prescribed course of fire.

To STOP FIRING and declare the range SAFE: "SHOOTERS, YOU HAVE x MINUTES REMAINING" To alert all shooters that a general Cold Range is about to be called and to allow the slower shooters to complete the course of fire.

Range Operating Procedures

General

The RSO on duty will be equipped with first aid supplies, basic tools, and radio for communications with the Instructor Range and Long Range. Instructor must check in with RSO upon arrival at range.

Lead Instructor training on other ranges is responsible for acquiring a radio and Med Kit from the RSO on duty before the start of class, and to return the radio and Med Kit before leaving the range. Instructor will be billed for any materials damaged or not returned.

RSOs and Instructors are responsible for paying attention to the radio for Range Updates and communicating with the other Ranges about status.

RSO commands and range rules must be accepted at this range. Challenge to any rule or RSO command may be made to the Bunker Gun Club management.

Ranges will remain cold outside of set range hours. No live fire will take place outside of set range hours.

The Bunker Gun Club does have wood target stands, rubber dummy targets, and steel targets available for use. Requests must be made 2 weeks prior to scheduled class and are not guaranteed. A fee for targets may be charged in addition to the fee for range usage.

Pocket Berms and Instructor Range Instructor

Range is off limits to everyone without prior permission from Jeremy Liggett. It should be scheduled on the calendar. RSO’s must call for confirmation and not take anyone’s word for it. They must be a certified instructor with insurance or current active Law Enforcement Officer to be over there without an RSO. An RSO cannot leave the Main Range while on duty to go to the Instructor Range with someone to shoot.

Pocket Berms are a work in progress and protocol for them will change as time goes on.

For now: Paper targets only. Pistol calibers, up to 5.56 rifle calibers, and machine guns are permitted. They are for training and doing things we don’t want them doing on the main range, like moving and shooting and drawing from holster.

Machine guns and binary triggers will be directed to the pocket berms to control noise.

Do Not Shoot the Walls! Only shoot the dirt berms! Do not shoot the walls!

Hot and Cold Range Procedure with Other Ranges The instructor who reserves the range for instructing purposes has the right to run the class as they see fit, as long as it is done in a safe manner and all major safety guidelines are followed.

Each Range can operate independently of other ranges except for specific conditions. ALL Ranges MUST go COLD for following conditions:

  • If a person is going down range past the 100 yard berm on the Main Range
  • If a person is going down range past the 100 yard berm on the Instructor Range
