THREE FUNDAMENTAL NRA FIREARM SAFETY RULES: 1. ALWAYS keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction. When on the NRA Range, the ONLY safe direction is DOWNRANGE. 2. ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot and your sights are on target. 3. ALWAYS keep your firearm unloaded until ready to use. GENERAL FIREARM SAFETY RULES: 1. Treat ALL firearms, including “blue” guns, SIRT firearms, etc., as if they are ALWAYS loaded. 2. Be sure your firearm is safe to operate and know how to use it. 3. Use ONLY the correct ammunition for your firearm. Do NOT have ammunition present when cleaning or working on your firearm. 4. The "safety" on a firearm is a mechanical device that can fail. 5. Know your target and what is beyond it. Bullets do not fall harmlessly after hitting the target. 6. Eye and ear protection is required on the NRA Range at all times. 7. Never use alcohol, drugs, or impairing medications before or while shooting. 8. Store your firearms so they are not accessible to unauthorized persons, especially minors. 9. When gripping a semi-automatic pistol, always keep both thumbs on the same side of the gun. 10. When a cartridge fails to fire immediately, it could be a hang-fire or misfire: a. Keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction (DOWNRANGE). b. Wait at least 30 seconds. c. Open the action and remove the cartridge. 11. Align your eye, front sight, rear sight, and target properly. Focus on the front sight when aiming. A shot will hit the target high when the front sight is higher than the rear sight. "Hip" firing is prohibited. NRA RANGE OPERATIONAL RULES: 1. ALL Range Officer commands are to be followed immediately and without argument. Obey all federal, state, and local firearm laws. Range Officer decisions are final. 2. Ensure that your firearms are cased or holstered before entering the NRA Range building. ABSOLUTELY NO GUN HANDLING IS PERMITTED ANYWHERE AT THE NRA RANGE EXCEPT WITHIN THE CONFINES OF THE SHOOTING BOOTHS. 3. Case/uncase your firearms in the shooting booth. Do NOT handle uncased firearms outside of the booths or behind the shooter when in the booth. Do NOT transfer uncased firearms between lanes. 4. The NRA range is a "HOT" range, meaning firing can commence at any time. You MUST remain behind the firing line at all times. 5. All firearms not in use on the range must be in any one of the following conditions: · Holstered (loaded or unloaded), · On the table/floor in the booth (unloaded, pointed downrange, action open, and magazine removed), or · Cased (unloaded). 6. All shooters must complete the Range Application, sign the NRA Range Waiver, and pass the NRA Range Safety Test before using the NRA Range.
7. Owners of Class III firearms must be in possession of all special permits required by law. Range Management reserves the right to review these documents at their discretion. Full-auto fire is by appointment only and outside of public hours. 8. Food, beverages, and smoking (including dipping, vaping, etc.) are prohibited on the NRA Range. 9. Black powder and/or muzzle loading firearms are prohibited at the NRA Range. Archery of any kind is prohibited at the NRA Range. 10. Any pistol up to and including .50 AE or .500 S&W Magnum, and any rifle up to and including .460 Weatherby Magnum, may be used at the NRA Range. You may NOT shoot .50 BMG at the NRA Range. 11. Tracer, incendiary, armor piercing, steel core, steel jacketed, and bi-metal jacketed ammunition are prohibited. 12. Shotguns must be used with slugs only. Birdshot, buckshot, etc. ammo is prohibited. Shotguns must have sights and a shoulder stock. "Hip" firing is prohibited. 13. The entrance to and exit from the shooting area are one way only (one-way traffic). For the entrance to and exit from the shooting area, allow the first of the two doors to fully close before you open the second of the two door to contain the gunfire noise to the shooting area. 14. When the command "CEASE FIRE" is given: a. Stop shooting IMMEDIATELY. b. Keep your firearm pointed downrange and remove your finger from the trigger. c. Set the firearm on the table and step back out of your shooting booth. d. Wait for further instructions from the Range Officer. Note: Shooters have the responsibility to call a "CEASE FIRE" if they observe an unsafe situation. 15. Do NOT go forward of the red firing line. ONLY NRA Range personnel may go forward of the red firing line. 16. Once the firing line is declared "COLD", do NOT handle any firearms. 17. Only NRA Range approved paper targets may be used. Targets with faces, human characteristics, or excessive size are prohibited. What constitutes acceptable target type and use is left to Range Officer discretion. 18. Place the point on the target at which you will aim at eye/muzzle level to ensure that your shots strike the backstop and not the floor, ceiling, wall, or carrier system. Be aware of your shooting angle. 19. Rifle muzzles must be forward of red firing line to reduce muzzle blast back into the shooting booths. 20. Shoot on your target only. Cross-firing at targets is prohibited. Shooting at objects on the floor downrange is prohibited. Shooting at or hitting the target carrier is prohibited. Rapid fire is allowed but MUST be controlled, confining all rounds on the target. 21. Only belt holsters (inside or outside the waist) placed on the same side as the shooting hand (strong side) may be used on the NRA Range (appendix draw is permitted). Shoulder, ankle, behind-the-back, cross-draw, etc. holsters are prohibited. 22. If you are going to draw from a holster you are required to: a. Remove the shooting table from in front of you AFTER you have placed your firearm in your holster. b. Stay within the confines of the shooting booth during the draw. c. Do NOT muzzle yourself in any way during the draw or reholster. d. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target and you are ready to shoot. 23. You may collect your own brass that is behind the red firing line. Brass from other shooters and all brass that falls in front of the firing line may not be collected. Note: When finished shooting, please use squeegees provided to push spent brass onto the range floor in front of the red firing line. 24. Firearms may not be cleaned at the NRA Range. The use of solvents in the shooting area is prohibited. 25. Always wash your hands and face immediately after shooting. Multiple sinks are located directly opposite the shooting area exit door. If provided, use lead removal soap. 26. NRA Range Officers reserve the right to inspect and prohibit any firearms, targets, or ammunition for safety considerations. 27. Shooters may be removed from the NRA Range for safety or other concerns if the situation warrants. Shooters may be held financially responsible for damages caused to the NRA Range facility or equipment.
FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE RULES MAY RESULT IN A REPRIMAND AND/OR YOUR REMOVAL FROM THE NRA RANGE.
