City Bouldering & Climbing Co Acknowledgement of Risk:

This form is for parents or guardians to sign on behalf of their children aged 14-17 to allow them to climb unsupervised. You must ensure you and the child/children you are signing for understand the following document. 16 and 17 year-olds can climb unsupervised without an assessment. Only selected 14 and 15-year-olds can climb unsupervised after going through a pre-booked, in-person assessment with a member of staff.

This is a legal document and we cannot change it for you once it is complete, so please make sure you read through everything carefully and fill it out accurately.

It is important that you understand this document. There is inherent risk involved with climbing centres and associated activities. By signing this form, you are stating you understand that these risks cannot be completely removed. If you do not understand any of the terminology or content, ask a member of staff to clarify

Climbing participation statements:

  • BMC – “The British Mountaineering Council recognises that climbing (including bouldering) and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions.”
  • ABC – “All climbing and bouldering activities have a risk of serious injury or death. Participants must be aware and accept that even if they follow all good practice there may still be the risk of accident and injury. It is the responsibility of the participant to adhere to the conditions of use."

1. Acknowledgement of Risks

  • THE MATTING DOES NOT REMOVE THE RISK OF INJURY. The soft flooring under the bouldering walls is designed to provide a more comfortable landing for climbers falling or jumping from the bouldering wall. The soft flooring does not make the climbing any safer. Broken and sprained limbs are common on this type of climbing wall despite the soft landing. Uncontrolled falls are likely to result in injuries to yourself or others and you should always be doing your utmost to avoid the risk of uncontrolled falls. Injuries can still occur even after a controlled/planned jump but are more likely after an uncontrolled fall.
  • Climbing beyond your capabilities on any wall is likely to result in a fall. Any fall may result in an injury despite the safety systems in place to avoid it. You must make your own assessment of the risks whenever you climb.
  • Volumes on the walls are designed to enhance the quality of climbing, but you must be aware of and accept that when climbing above them there is an additional risk of falling onto them
  • Participants must be aware and accept that climbing holds can spin or break

2. Conditions of Use

Our Duty of Care

The conditions of use of the climbing centre are not intended to limit your enjoyment of the facilities; they are part of the duty of care that we, as operators, owe to you, the customer, by law. As such, they are not negotiable and if you are not prepared to abide by them then the staff may ask you to leave.

Your Duty of Care

You have a duty of care to act responsibly towards the other users of the centre, follow good practice and abide by the conditions of use of the centre. Statements of ‘Good Practice’ are posted around the centre adjacent to the relevant facilities. These describe the accepted methods of use of equipment and climbing areas.

Unsupervised Climbing

Before climbing unsupervised, you must be aware of how to climb safely, understand the dangers involved in climbing, and accept the risks involved. You must abide by the rules of the centre at all times, and be aware of all other climbing users. Staff may provide advice when asked, but no formal instruction is provided unless booked.

Facilities & Services

  • We reserve the right to close for any period of time required for any activity.
  • CCTV will be monitored and recorded throughout the centre for the purposes of crime prevention and public safety.
  • We are not responsible for any lost, stolen, or damaged personal belongings.

3.The Rules

General Safety Rules:

  • Check in at reception before every visit.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings and exercise due care, common sense, and self-preservation at all times.
  • Never walk, stand, or sit underneath someone climbing. Always be aware of the other climbers around you and how your actions and movements will affect them.
  • Never climb above, below, or near another climber. Before climbing, always check that your route doesn't overlap with another climber.
  • Descend by climbing down using any holds. If climbing down is not possible, use a controlled jump. Uncontrolled falls increase the risk of injury to yourself or others.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure that you can climb down or land safely - don’t climb into a situation that you cannot safely get out of.
  • Hard items, food, bottles and bags, are not allowed on the matting. Lock up all valuables.
  • Always empty your pockets before climbing. Remove all jewellery - especially rings.
  • Do not attempt to climb over the climbing wall, grab the top of the climbing wall, or grab any surrounding structures.
  • Climbing shoes must be worn when climbing; outside shoes and bare feet are not allowed. Suitable clothing must be worn at all times in the centre - please remove hoodies.
  • Report any problems with the walls, equipment, or other climbers’ behaviour to a member of staff immediately. This is particularly important with broken or spinning holds.
  • People under the influence of alcohol or drugs are not allowed to climb, to be in the climbing area, or to supervise. Alcohol may only be consumed on site if purchased on the premises. Smoking or vaping is not allowed in the centre.
  • Please make yourself aware of the location of the fire exits in the building and fire assembly point(s).

Gym Equipment & Training Areas

  • Use of training facilities and equipment carries a risk of personal injury and death, and are used at your own personal risk.
  • If you are unsure how to use any equipment or how to complete an exercise, seek advice from a member of staff before continuing.
  • By using our gym facilities and equipment, you accept responsibility for your own actions and safety.
  • Participation is not recommended under certain medical conditions, and it is your responsibility to seek proper medical advice before using any training.
  • Participating in group classes and personal training, such as Strength & Conditioning, yoga, or other exercise classes, may present additional risks due to engaging in strenuous exercises.

  • We do not require parent or guardians to visit the centre personally before giving permission for their 16-17 year olds to climb unsupervised, but we strongly recommend it
  • Participants aged 16-17 cannot supervise under 16s.
  • We reserve the right to refuse continued use of the center if the young person does not act in line the conditions of use & centre rules

Unsupervised Ages 14-15 Rules

  • Select 14-15 year olds can be signed off to climb unsupervised if they demonstrate adequate prior experience, maturity, and understanding of the rules and hazards associated with climbing.

  • I understand that bouldering and its inherent risks means it can be a dangerous activity.
  • I acknowledge that bouldering is a physically demanding sport and I participate entirely at my own risk. City Bouldering or Climbing Co, its owners, and its employees shall not be liable for any personal injury, death, or loss resulting from the inherent risks of climbing or my own failure to follow safety protocols.
