This year, Capitol Movement Inc. (CMI) celebrates 20 years of inspiring the community in Washington D.C. through dance. However, the rising costs and limited availability of affordable theater and dance studio space in Washington, D.C. threaten our ability to uplift our dancers by providing the necessary opportunities for them to showcase their talent and commitment.
Although we’ve received invaluable support from the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities and Learn24, the support is outweighed by skyrocketing rental fees and very limited availability of rehearsal and performance space in the District. A recent Washington Post article highlighted the scarcity of theatre space, especially for smaller-budget arts companies, like CMI. The D.C. Commission on Arts and Humanities also released a report that showed nearly two of every three arts-related organizations have yet to financially recover from the economic challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many arts organizations are struggling to keep pace with rising costs at a time when arts are desperately needed to inspire, build community, and foster social change.
We urge you to join us in finding a sustainable solution to this critical issue. We hope to engage the Executive Office of Mayor Muriel Bowser to solve this dilemma – one that not only affects CMI, but dance education and performance for many movement companies in the District. We would like to urge the D.C. government to provide affordable performance spaces and offer a tax break incentive for venues that partner with 501(c)(3) nonprofits – and we need your help.
We look forward to convening to address this threat to dancers, artists, and performers in Washington, D.C. By working together, we can protect the future of dance for all—dancers young and old, of all races and gender identities—who call our nation’s capital their home for artistic expression.
Sign our petition today to: - Urge the D.C. government to provide affordable performance spaces for local arts organizations. Your signature can help ensure that dancers and artists in the District have a place to share their talents!
- Help advocate for a tax break incentive for venues that partner with 501(c)(3) nonprofits. This would help theatre spaces and local arts nonprofits.
