 Waka Ama NZ Representative Paddlers, Coaches and Management Code of Conduct Agreement - Brazil 2025

This Code of Conduct takes effect from the time NZ contingent members are confirmed to the conclusion of the current World's campaign. It is in line with the Waka Ama New Zealand general code of conduct https://www.wakaama.co.nz/pages/read/1004720 It is to be signed by each individual involved in the campaign.


Values

The Waka Ama NZ values must be adhered to at all times:

  • Manaakitanga: We encourage the practice of reciprocity through sharing of ourselves and of our resources, nurturing all people and accepting our differences.
  • Whanaungatanga: Is our sense of belonging, identity and collective strength, not only through kinship / whakapapa but also being related to all within the Waka Ama community. 
  • Hauora: We support and promote the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of all our participants. 
  • Tū Tangata: We are accountable for our actions. We have respect for each other, for our waka and our environment. We stand proud in our integrity and passion.

Commitment

  • Once you have signed this agreement you acknowledge that you are committed to the team and should you withdraw you are responsible for all costs as invoiced by Waka Ama NZ by the due date.

Other people’s personal information

As a member of the Elite Teams, you may be privy to personal information about other athletes, the coach, or the manager. 

  • You acknowledge the sensitivity of that information and agree not to disclose it to any other person or use it for any person. 
  • Unless it is to medical or first aid providers for that person’s health and well-being. 

Alcohol Consumption

The legal age limit in Brazil is 18 years

The following requirements are to be adhered to:

  • All individuals who are under 18, will not be permitted to consume alcohol for the duration of the trip;
  • Team management must take responsibility for those paddlers under the age of 18;
  • For anyone 18 years or older, alcohol cannot be consumed whilst wearing your official New Zealand Uniform

Drugs and banned substances

  • The consumption of non-exempt substances detailed in the WADA policy will not be permitted. You are required to comply with the IVF Anti-Doping Policy procedures;  
  • Monitoring and adhering to this policy will be the responsibility of all individuals travelling with the WANZ contingent.  

Smoking/Vaping

  • Our sport (Waka Ama) is smoke-free and vape-free, this is true of all WANZ-sanctioned events in New Zealand 
  • We request that if you must smoke/vape you DO NOT do so in the official uniform of New Zealand and only do this in designated areas

Health and Safety

  • Elite paddlers must take reasonable care of their health and safety and ensure that any actions don’t cause harm to others
  • The area coordination team and elite managers will provide information and support if medical care is required
  • Event Organisers have stipulated that all competitors must be covered by insurance for racing. Check with your manager if you are unsure about your insurance cover

Uniforms

The following will be the standard required and is not negotiable:

  • all individuals must wear NZ's current national racing strip when racing in all events;  
  • during medal presentations, a full racing uniform must be worn;
  • Uniforms will not be tampered with or altered before or during the competition.
  • New Zealand off-the-water shirt that has been supplied by Waka Ama NZ is to be worn at the opening ceremony 
  • Teams must adhere to the uniform guidelines when using the WANZ and IVF logos 

Other

  • In the spirit of whanaungatanga all contingent members and their supporters are asked to treat each other and those of other cultures that they will encounter during this competition with due dignity and with a particular appreciation for cultural sensitivity.
  • In line with the Waka Ama New Zealand Code of Conduct referenced above, participants and management are required to operate within the laws of the host country and the regulations and procedures of the IVF Va’a World Distance Championships 
  • Respect – the property and resources of your hosts. 
  • This code of conduct applies to all individuals associated with the contingent in a paddling, coaching or management or support capacity.
  • For those elite paddlers under the age of 18, the team management will be responsible for your care for the entire trip until arriving back in NZ

Social Media 

  • No contingent member will bring Waka Ama New Zealand or its associated clubs, event hosts or other countries/competitors into disrepute (in person or via social media) during the IVF World Distance Campaign 2025

Enforcement

  • We must each take responsibility for our actions.
  • You represent yourself, your teammates, the contingent, your whānau and all New Zealanders. 
  • Any contingent member in breach of any of the above Code of Conduct items or other behaviour that is not satisfactory will be referred to the Waka Ama New Zealand Area Coordination team and potentially the Waka Ama NZ Performance Advisory Committee (PAC) 
  • The outcomes of the breach may result in non-participation in Waka Ama NZ sanctioned events in New Zealand or extreme cases representing New Zealand abroad. For serious misconduct, the Area Coordination team and Waka Ama New Zealand may be empowered to revoke individual/s eligibility to compete at the World Distance Championships.

  • The well-being of our Elite paddlers is of the utmost importance, if you feel as though you need more support or to report an incident please contact your manager in the first instance or worlds@wakaama.co.nz
