General ExpectationsAt Georgetown Riding Academy (GRA), proper riding attire is required to promote rider safety, professionalism, and a polished appearance. Riders are expected to arrive dressed appropriately for their scheduled lesson. Failure to follow this dress code may result in a rider being unable to participate in their lesson for that day, and the lesson may be forfeited without refund.
All riders must wear attire that is safe, clean, well-fitted, and appropriate for working around horses. Required Riding AttireHelmets:
- ASTM/SEI-approved riding helmets are required for all riders while mounted.
- Helmets must be properly fitted and fastened.
- Bicycle or novelty helmets are not permitted.
- Preferred helmet brand: Ovation (other approved brands may be permitted with instructor approval).
Pants:
- Riding breeches or jodhpurs are required.
- Jeans may be worn only during a rider’s introductory period.
- Shorts, skirts, dresses, or leggings without grip are not permitted.
Footwear:
- Boots with a hard sole and defined heel are required.
- Paddock boots are preferred. - No cowboy boots
- Sneakers, Crocs, sandals, flip-flops, or open-toed shoes are not permitted.
Tops:
- Shirts must fully cover the torso and be tucked in while mounted.
- Tank tops must have straps wide enough to cover shoulders.
- Crop tops, low-cut, strapless, backless, or sheer tops are not permitted. Introductory Period & Rider ProgressionNew riders are permitted an introductory period of up to 30 days to acquire proper riding attire and equipment.
After the introductory period, all riders are required to arrive fully dressed in proper riding attire for every lesson, including:
- Riding pants (breeches or jodhpurs)
- Proper riding boots with a heel
- Their own ASTM/SEI-approved helmet
- Riding gloves The instructor will notify families when the introductory period has concluded. Gloves & Weather RequirementsRiding gloves are required when temperatures are below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Gloves are recommended at all times for safety and proper rein use. Hair, Jewelry & Personal ItemsHair:
- Hair must be pulled back and secured.
- Hair must fit neatly under the helmet.
Jewelry:
- Jewelry must be minimal.
- Dangling earrings, hoop earrings, necklaces, bracelets, or facial piercings are not permitted while riding.
Personal Items:
- Cell phones, earbuds, smart watches, or similar items must be removed while mounted unless approved by an instructor. These recommendations are provided for guidance and convenience only. Comparable riding equipment meeting safety and fit standards may be approved by the instructor. Non-Compliance & Final AuthorityIf a rider arrives improperly dressed, they may be asked to change if appropriate attire is available. The lesson may be shortened or canceled for safety reasons and may be forfeited without refund.
Georgetown Riding Academy instructors have final authority in determining whether attire and equipment are safe, appropriate, and in keeping with the standards of the program.
