Volunteer Expectations and Guidelines 


Our mission as the Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club is to spread the love of whitewater to local Columbia River Gorge youth. We aim to make the sport of whitewater kayaking more affordable and accessible to teens of all backgrounds. To build a greater respect for the outdoors, we will be organizing group activities that promote the preservation and protection of the environment. 

As a volunteer for the Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club you have the right to: 

  • Work in an environment that makes you feel safe and welcome 
  • Know the risks of the activities that you will be participating in 
  • Work in an environment that is supportive and cares about your wellbeing 
  • Ask for support and assistance when needed 
  • Provide feedback and contribute ideas 
  • Choose not to participate in activities if they feel as though it may cause them harm mentally or emotionally 
  • Know how to report issues (i.e. harassment, safety concerns, discrimination) and the investigation process that will occur 

As a volunteer for the Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club you have the responsibility to:

  • Act with respect, dignity, and professionalism
  • Fulfill the duties described within volunteer positions
  • Notify the program director (Naomi) if they will not be able to make it to the shift they signed up for 
  • Respect all CGJKC policies
  • Be sober at all CGJKC events 
  • For river outings come prepared with all necessary gear:
  • PFD 
  • Helmet 
  • Skirt 
  • Kayak 
  • Paddle 
  • Throw bag 
  • River knife 
  • Appropriate layering (i.e. drysuit, drytop, shortie) 
  • River shoes 
  • Be on time and stay for the duration of the event unless otherwise discussed with the lead volunteers 
  • Have a confident combat roll 
  • Feel comfortable in class III whitewater (assistant volunteers) or class IV whitewater (lead volunteers) 
  • Lead: current river rescue certification and current first aid/CPR

I have read the rights and responsibilities that I have as a volunteer for the Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club. I agree to abide by the responsibilities outlined above. I understand that violation of these responsibilities may result in my termination as a volunteer.
