This Acknowledgement of Risk Form is for adults (18+) to complete to supervise under 18’s rope climbing at Above Adventure (or permit an instructor or other suitable adult approved by Above Adventure to supervise), and should only be completed by a parent or guardian. If you are unsure of any aspect of the form you should not fill this in online. Please come into the centre and fill it in where a staff member can answer any questions or clarify any points that may be unclear. If you have any impairments that can affect your filling in of the form or climbing, please fill in the form within the centre with staff support.

PARTICIPATION STATEMENT

“Mountaineering Scotland recognises that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement.”

It is important that you understand this document. There are inherent risks involved with climbing centres and associated activities. By signing this form, you are stating that you understand these risks cannot be completely removed. If you do not understand any of the terminology or content, please ask a member of staff to clarify.

SUPERVISION OF NOVICE MINORS

Where they agree to take responsibility for the supervision of all activities within the centre, adult registered users may sign in a total of two under 18’s on the following conditions:

  • Supervising members owe a higher duty of care to under 18’s than to adults of equal competence
  • Under 18’s must remain under the supervising member’s constant supervision at all times whilst on the premises
  • Under 18’s must not engage in any climbing activity beyond their level of competence, ability, or maturity, nor that of the adult supervising
  • Supervising members must have the parent/guardian’s consent for any under 18 they are supervising

Conditions of use

General Safety

  1. You must check in at reception.
  2. You must exercise care, common sense and self-preservation at all times.
  3. Report any issue with wall, equipment or other climber's behaviour.
  4. Report any spinning holds.
  5. Do not distract other people while belaying.
  6. Don't stand underneath other climbers.
  7. If you have children, you must keep them under control and supervise them at all times.
  8. Please make yourself aware of the fire exits and fire assembly point which is down the street at the junction of Grange Street and Woodstock Street.
  9. As a user of this climbing wall, you must be aware and accept the following:
  • volumes on the walls are designed to enhance the quality of climbing but you must be aware that when climbing above them there is an additional risk of falling into them.
  • climbing beyond your capabilities on any wall is likely to result in a fall.
  • any fall may result in an injury despite the safety systems in place.
  • you must make your own assessment of risk whenever you climb.
  • participants must understand that climbing while pregnant can increase risk posed to mother and child.
  • participants must be aware and accept that hand holds can spin and break.
  • you must do everything reasonable and practical to avoid endangering yourself or others
  • you must be aware of the safety rules and adhere to them at all times
  • you are responsible for inspecting and maintaining your own equipment
  • please remove all jewellery and empty pockets before climbing.
  • do Not drink alcohol before or during your climbing session

Rope Climbing

Top Rope

  • Always use a climbing harness to attach yourself to the rope tying the rope directly into the harness using a rethreaded figure of 8 or bowline both with stoppers
  • Many of the climbs have top ropes already in place. Do not take them down for use on other climbs.
  • It is you're responsibility to vet your climbing partner's ability before they belay you.
  • Always abide by good practice when belaying.
  • Be aware that floor walkers are in centre to keep every one safe
  • Always perform a buddy check belayer to climber and climber to belayer prior to setting off
  • If it is your first time on the wall perform a practice lower after 2 to 3 metres to allow the climber to have a feel for lowering.

Leading

  • Lead belaying requires a higher degree of skill and understanding from top rope belaying and should only be undertaken if you have received training or are experienced in these techniques, if you are unsure ask a member of staff
  • When using lead walls, you must supply your own rated dynamic rope ( we recommend 40m rope for our tallest climb)
  • Quick draws are installed on lead wall. Please don't use your own.
  • You must not miss any clips and should be clipped in order.
  • Edelrid Ohm may be used by clipped into bolt not the quickdraw
  • Always perform a buddy check belayer to climber and climber to belayer prior to setting off

When Belaying

  • Always use a belay device attached to your climbing harness with a locking karabiner as per manufacture's instructions.
  • Pay attention to your partner while belaying
  • Always stand close to the wall while belaying .
  • In event of using an anchor please reinstall the cover after use.
  • If you need to use inclusive methods for belaying please inform a member of staff who will be happy to assist.

Auto belays

  • If you are unsure how to use an auto belay please talk to a member of staff
  • The matted area on the ground around auto belays is a landing zone, be aware of other climbers when standing in this area
  • Please see any instruction that will be posted next to auto belays
  • No Helmets are to be worn on auto belays
  • All hoods should be tucked in or removed before using auto belays
  • YOU MUST PREFORM Safety check EVERY time before using auto belays
  • If the belay tape is retracted and the mat is on the ground please contact a member of staff immediately, NEVER attempt to retrieve.
  • When you are ready to descend, look down on every occasion and ensure your landing zone is clear
  • It is best practise to look out for other climbers using the auto-belay devices and promote safe climbing practices.
  • Stay in the line of your climb at all times, going astray will NEGATIVELY affect the response time if you fall and will increase the likelihood of injury or death.
  • An unsupervised adult auto-belay climber may only supervise one child climbing on the auto-belay devices at a time.

Bouldering

  • Downclimb whenever possible. If this is not possible use a controlled/planned jump.
  • We advise that children should not be allowed to climb to the top of the bouldering wall. The children’s circuit has been specifically set with shorter problems.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure that you can climb down or land safely; don’t climb into a situation that you cannot safely get out of.
  • Never climb directly above or below another climber.
  • Remove anything from pockets that could hurt you when landing.
  • Always be aware of people climbing above and around you.
  • Keep the mat free of objects and obstructions like bags, clothing, chalk bags, brushes, bottles, keys etc.
  • Spotting involves helping someone to control their fall, not trying to catch them. Do not attempt to spot someone unless you feel confident to do it properly. Make sure the climber wants you to spot them.
  • THE SOFT MATTING DOES NOT REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY
