Watching marine mammals in their natural surroundings helps us to better appreciate these beautiful animals. When humans get too close to wildlife in their habitat, we risk disturbing them. There are laws and guidelines about marine mammals to protect their well-being. In Canada, it’s against the law to disturb a marine mammal. Snorkelers and paddlers are encouraged to follow these guidelines when in the presence of marine mammals. · We are here to observe seals and other wildlife only. You cannot approach a seal to feed, swim, or interact with it. If a seal approaches you, stay calm. Seals are very curious and will usually move off after they have had a look at you. · You cannot move a marine mammal · You cannot separate a marine mammal from its group or go between it and a calf · Move away slowly and cautiously at the first sign of disturbance or agitation from the animal · Be cautious and quiet near haul-outs, areas where marine mammals come onto land Canada’s laws and regulations help ensure marine mammals can still be enjoyed. Approaching marine mammals too quickly, coming too close or making too much noise can disturb or stress these wonderful creatures who call our waters home.
