It is important that you understand this document. There is inherent risk involved with climbing centres and associated activities. By signing this form, you are stating you understand that these risks cannot be completely removed. If you do not understand any of the terminology or content, ask a member of staff to clarify
Climbing participation statements:
- BMC – “The British Mountaineering Council recognises that climbing (including bouldering) and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions.”
- ABC – “All climbing activities (encompassing roped climbing, bouldering and auto belay activities) have a risk of serious injury or death. Participants must be aware of and accept that even if they follow all good practice there may still be the risk of accident and injury. It is the responsibility of the participant to adhere to the conditions of use.”
1. Acknowledgement of Risks Auto belays: - Climbing and the use of auto belay devices involves inherent risks of serious injury and death, which cannot be completely eliminated.
- Failure to correctly attach to the auto belay device may result in a ground fall, serious injury, or death.
- The auto belay device lowers the climber automatically when they let go; during descent the climber may collide with the wall, holds, or other people below.
- Misuse of the device, including but not limited to swinging, jumping, pulling on the lanyard, or interfering with the mechanism, may cause injury to the climber or others, or damage to the equipment.
- Failure to clip in or ensure the harness is correctly fitted could result in serious injury as safety systems may be compromised by incorrect use.
Bouldering: - THE MATTING DOES NOT REMOVE THE RISK OF INJURY. The soft flooring under the bouldering walls is designed to provide a more comfortable landing for climbers falling or jumping from the bouldering wall. The soft flooring does not make the climbing any safer. Broken and sprained limbs are common on this type of climbing wall despite the soft landing. Uncontrolled falls are likely to result in injuries to yourself or others and you should always be doing your utmost to avoid the risk of uncontrolled falls. Injuries can still occur even after a controlled/planned jump but are more likely after an uncontrolled fall.
- Climbing beyond your capabilities on any wall is likely to result in a fall. Any fall may result in an injury despite the safety systems in place to avoid it. You must make your own assessment of the risks whenever you climb.
- Volumes on the walls are designed to enhance the quality of climbing but you must be aware of and accept that when climbing above them there is an additional risk of falling onto them
- Participants must be aware and accept that climbing holds can spin or break
2. Conditions of Use
Our Duty of Care The conditions of use of the climbing centre are not intended to limit your enjoyment of the facilities; they are part of the duty of care that we, as operators, owe to you, the customer, by law. As such, they are not negotiable and if you are not prepared to abide by them then the staff may ask you to leave.
Your Duty of Care You, and anyone you are responsible for, have a duty of care to act responsibly towards the other users of the centre, follow good practice and abide by the conditions of use of the centre. Statements of ‘Good Practice’ are posted around the centre adjacent to the relevant facilities. These describe the accepted methods of use of equipment and climbing areas.
