Climbing Team Mission
The mission of our team program is to foster a healthy relationship to sport, prioritize wellness, and cultivate community.
Team Levels and Criteria for Participation See website for individual program descriptions, prerequisites, and policies. These are maintained on the program registration page and may change as we adapt to changing programs, school schedules, or coach staffing capacity.
Belaying Policies
Climbers must be 12 years of age or older to take a top rope belay test. Climbers must be 14 or older to take a lead climb or belay test.
Exceptions: - During scheduled youth programs athletes as young as 8 may be trained to Top Rope belay and must pass the appropriate checks to be certified by head coaches.
- Outside of scheduled youth programs an athlete younger than 12 must request an exception to top rope belay, lead belay or lead climb. These exceptions require approval from head coaches since there is no guaranteed supervision or support outside of practice times. A child under 12 who has received an approval from head coaches to TR or lead belay or lead climb outside of program times must still be supervised by an adult with an equal or higher certification level.
- These privileges are only available and granted to athletes who have demonstrated continuous and excellent belay technique during programs.
*Youth athletes who are lead or top rope belaying will be held to the highest standards and must demonstrate focused and responsible athlete behavior. Should desk staff or coaches feel that youth belayers are not taking these responsibilities seriously, they have the right to revoke an athlete’s belay certification.
Competitions There are several options for competitions including individual local events hosted by other gyms and USA Climbing sanctioned competitions. We will provide information about these opportunities to climbers and their families throughout the year.
*Attending competitions is not a requirement for participation in team programs.
Local Climbing Competitions: Several gyms in our area host non-USA Climbing sanctioned events, including The Rock Gym in Rexburg and The Edge in Idaho Falls. There are also local outdoor competitions including The Pocatello Pump at Ross Park in Pocatello, and the Jackson Hole Town Pump at Snow King in Jackson, WY. These local competitions are great opportunities for your athlete to experience climbing competitions in a low stress environment. We encourage you to reach out to determine if your child is ready to participate in local competitions.
TRG Coaching at local competitions:
Teton Rock Gym coaches generally attend at least one local competition in the fall and spring season. Their purpose at these events is to organize TRG climbers, help explain rules and strategies to athletes and parents, and to help kids navigate competition-related challenges.
USA Climbing Competitions: USA Climbing is the national governing body of competitive climbing in the United States and competitions run from September through June. Success at the Regional level sets climbers on a path to the Divisional, National, and even World level. The year is broken into two seasons; the Bouldering Season in the fall and the Sport and Speed Climbing Season in the spring.
Memberships are required to compete in USA Climbing competitions. Please note that to qualify for higher level competitions (i.e. Regionals and beyond) athletes must be registered for a Competitor membership with USA Climbing.
We are part of Division 2 and Region 22 which covers most of Idaho, Montana, northern Utah and Wyoming. The Region 22 webpage hosts information regarding the current regional and divisional coordinators and the competition schedule. You can also join the Region 22 Facebook Group for more information from regional coordinators.
TRG Coaching for USAC competitions:
At this time, Teton Rock Gym will not be sending coaches to USA Climbing Competitions. We will, however, continue training predominantely boulder in the fall and rope-climbing in the spring to best prepare athletes for the corresponding competition seasons. We will continue to provide information to help families interested in learning more and/or making the jump to USAC competition participation. It’s the guardian’s responsibility to register their athletes, provide travel, lodging, meals and supervision for these events.
Competition Communication: The predominant method of communication about general competition information will be via email. However, ‘Teton Rock Gym Team Programs’ Whatsapp group is a place for team-specific announcements and parent coordination for team families. You can request to be added to the team Whatsapp HERE. *This group is for families with children participating in TRG team programs only.
General Gym Youth Policies can be found here on our website.
