Firearm Safety & Rules

Muzzle Management

·       The muzzle of the firearm should be pointed in a safe direction at all times. A safe direction is determined through a continuous on-going decision making process. A safe direction can be defined as location or direction away from any person or anything you do not intend to damage. You will only point your muzzle at an intended target that you are justified in shooting. Downrange is an administratively designated area not necessarily a safe direction.

Trigger Finger Discipline

·       When handling a firearm, the firearm will remain on safe when equipped with a manual safety and your trigger finger will be off the trigger, paced on the frame or lower receiver of the firearm. You will deactivate the safety and manipulate the trigger once you have an acceptable sight picture on your intended target that you are justified in engaging. You will return the firearm to safe, de-cocking or operating a manual safety,

§ When you do not have an acceptable sight picture

§ Anytime you are conducting firearm manipulation and it will mechanically go on safe

Know the Status of Your Firearm

·       You should know the status of your firearm at all times. When the situation requires an unloaded firearm, you should conduct the necessary steps, to visually and physically inspect the weapon to ensure it is clear and then declared safe. When the situation requires the weapon to be loaded, you should complete the necessary steps to maintain the firearm in the most ready status possible as the situation allows. Failure to positively know the status of the firearm at all times or in the appropriate status depending on the situation can result in a failure to properly operate as intended or cause injury.

Examples of failure to know the status of your weapon are:

§ Empty Chamber

§ Failure to load a magazine in the firearm

§ Failure to have sufficient rounds to complete drill

Target Discrimination, Situational Awareness

§ Target discrimination is a continuous decision making process. You shall identify your intended target and follow muzzle management and trigger finger discipline rules. Additionally, you must maintain situational awareness in front of, beyond, and to the sides of yourself and your intended target at all times.

§ During graded evaluations, shooting the wrong target results in an automatic disqualification for that individual and for the individual’s target improperly shot.
