WORKING INSTRUCTIONS VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS This document applies to all general volunteers for the JABCECC. · Provide a resume/CV I Agree · Complete the application, sign the Volunteer Waiver and liability form and the Volunteer requirements form (this form). I Agree · Purchase a JABCECC shirt (at cost) to be worn at all events/encounters when representing the center (if volunteer role is with the public) I Agree · Attend an onboarding training I Agree Volunteering for the JABCECC can be a fulfilling activity. We offer an opportunity for our volunteers to be an instrumental part of creating a non-profit center from the ground up, a non-profit unlike any other. Another benefit to volunteering is that we can provide documentation to your school, employer, etc on the hours you have volunteered, provide recommendations to potential job opportunities, and provide opportunities within the center for advancement and learning new skills. 1) Compensation and ownershipThis is a non-paid volunteer position. Compensation will not be provided for work that is done for or on behalf of the center, including travel and meals. Expense reimbursement is allowed for only those items agreed upon in writing by David or Amy Bassett, in advance of the purchase. For example, materials purchased for the center. All reimbursement for expenses agreed upon between David or Amy Bassett and the individual must be submitted within 60 days of the purchase and with a valid receipt. Any agreed upon expenses outside of 60 days will not be reimbursed. Please refer to the IRS guidelines. Any work performed for the center while volunteering is the property of the JABCECC and the volunteer relinquishes any rights to the work. 2) Commitment
We request the volunteer make a commitment on the number of hours they will volunteer per month and how many months they will make said commitment. Volunteers should keep track of their hours and for events/encounters/volunteer days in person, sign in and sign out on the Volunteer sign-in log. This will allow us to help document activities and training for the center and provide us with evidence for any advancement in the center and recommendations/referrals. There is a 3 month probation period. No volunteers will receive a recommendation or referral if the 3 month probation period is not met. 3) Schedule/attendance If you have committed to a day/time for a volunteer sift, you are required to show. While we understand that emergencies can occur, we depend on your attendance to ensure we can operate smoothly. If you cancel within 2 days (<48 hours) of the volunteer shift three times in a 12 month period, you will be let go from your volunteer position and will not receive any letter of recommendation or referrals. The act of you signing up for a shift commits you to that shift. We require a one month’s notice for all shift commitments. We do not accept responses like “maybe, possibly”. 4) CorrespondenceE-mail communication is routinely sent out to update volunteers on upcoming events, activities, and how you can help meet your volunteer hours. It is requested that volunteers provide their schedule on which events/activities/encounters they are interested in. We request a response within 3 days of the email to ensure the center runs efficiently and is properly staffed. We require your schedule at least one month in advance, so we can be efficient with your time and our time. 5) Social media policy When sharing any photos taken at an event, at the center, or from any JABCECC function you are volunteering at, we require you tag us in the post. We encourage you to share, post, tag, comment on all social media posts. We do not allow posting anything derogatory or that depicts the center in a negative light or sharing confidential information with outside parties. 6) Training You are required to review the website (www.jabcecc.org) and the following online videos: https://youtu.be/4dwjS_eI-lQ https://youtu.be/hsLqi8pMEQ4 https://youtu.be/BXqGkPhU2VE Teaching An Old Fox New Tricks | Connecticut Public (ctpublic.org) 7) Volunteer activitiesWe have varied types of needs at the center where volunteers can make a huge impact. Advanced: These volunteer opportunities are by far the most advances and require documented training, commitment, dependability, and trust. · Animal handling · Animal training/socialization · Creating and/or running educational presentations · Creating and/or Running workshops and programs · Creating and/or Running encounters/events · Managing volunteers, programs, off site activities Skilled: Many people already have skills from your current jobs/lives that can be extremely useful for the center. Many of the below do not require time at the center and allow for a more flexible schedule. · Marketing/PR · Design/Artwork/marketing and merchandise materials · Social media (yes, that can mean sharing our posts, posting about us, or helping us post) · Fundraising · Grant writing · Event planning · Accounting/finance · Photography Basic: These activities are things that every organization needs in order to keep them going. Volunteers, with no prior experience can get their foot in the door by starting out with one of these activities and work your way up through our training program to more Skilled/Advanced activities. · Office assistant · Greeter · Merchandise clerk · Construction/landscaping/maintenance/fencing/cleaning · Creating animal enrichment · Outreach (placing flyers, research) · Cleaning animal enclosures and enrichment areas Volunteer Encounter Expectations · You should be ready to work at the time you are scheduled for your volunteer shift. · No cell phone use in front of guests. · Never go into any enclosure unless accompanied by a senior volunteer (Amy, Dave, Melissa, or Rox). · You are not permitted in the coyote/wolf area unless accompanied by a senior volunteer. · Appropriate clothing is required o JAB shirt or sweatshirt on program days. You will need to purchase one at cost o Closed toed shoes o Do not wear Uggs or any shoes/boots that have exposed faux fur · During encounters: This is not your encounter/experience o Stay with the group, do not wonder off to pet the animals or take pictures. o In the encounter area, stay standing and move around the guests o Pay attention, look interested, and engage with the guests (this is also your opportunity to learn). o Do not ask questions during the encounter, this is not your encounter. If a guest has a question and you do not know the answer 100%, ask Dave, Amy, Melissa, or Rox. o Follow the lead of the educators on the topics discussed and flow. o Do not look Lucan in the eyes. Respect what the handlers tell you. Not following instructions can have serious consequences for you and the animals, so failure to follow the handlers’ instructions may result in you immediately being let go. · Keep encounter areas clean and clutter free of your belongings. If you have a bag, purse, etc it can go into the training room or your car, if you have a beverage that is ok to keep by the coffee station. · Do not encourage bad behavior from guests or any of the animals o Do not put fingers in enclosures o Do not allow animals to nip, jump on backs, bite clothes · When guests arrive, check them in. Confirm in the software if the waiver was completed for all persons. If not, have them complete it using the QR code. If they are early keep them engaged in polite conversation, let them look around the gift store. I agree to the above volunteer expectations. I Agree
